about

This tape was made during the course of 2022. I had exactly 13 empty 2x15min empty cassettes, and although I have a lot of finished projects lying around I wanted to make something custom for those 13, as I also wanted to try to make a completely home-made run of physical objects. At the same time I was thinking a lot about some sounds from my youth but did not want to reproduce some meaningless nostalgia. Things like 90s game music, the tracker scene, and the dungeon synth genre were things swirling around in my head. But the thing I wanted to attempt was to make something like a native digital kind of lofi, but not in the sense of obsessing over old hardware and techniques. All these tracks are completely made within the tracker Renoise, using only its native sound processing capabilities. the only audio sources were waveforms that were drawn by me in the renoise sample editor or generated inside renoise itself. That is, no analogue, no vsts emulating vintage instruments and no samples. Then again, other than that no limits. However, while working with the music I noticed that in order to make thios music sound somewhat coherent I needed a method.- so what I ended up doing was that for each piece of music that was approaching "something" I would make a copy, with all sounds and the basic technical structure of the track, and then delete the complete, superficial composistion, and start again. In a way this allowed for a kind of a generative way of making music, which also effectivized some of the work of builduing everything from scratch. In many of these tracks I tried hard to avoid embellishments and let them stand as alone in their cold digital ugliness as possible, but obviously some sentimentality sneaks in, so this is not some consistent set of conseptual experiments with regards to end-point, even if I managed to stay true to the limitations I set for the process.
